Art Blom
Art Blom was born and raised in Idaho. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Boise State College and went on to receive a Master of Fine Arts in sculpture and drawing from The Ohio State University. After graduating he was the head of the sculpture department at Grand Valley State Colleges in Allendale, Michigan, near Grand Rapids where he was active in the art community.
Afer moving to Denver, Colorado, in the 1980’s, Art became interested in painting, although these were not traditional paintings. Art was still very much a sculptor at heart, and his paintings and drawings were of various man-made surfaces, exhibiting a fascination with the surface itself and the texture and color it brought to paper and canvas.
During the time he was working on these “surface” pieces, he was also working seasonally as a guide at a remote wilderness lodge, where he fell in love with the Colorado high country. He had always enjoyed the outdoors, but the Colorado mountains held a special fascination for him. Having moved his family to Grand Junction, Colorado, he was closer than ever to the country he loved. He started painting western landscapes using acrylics, then progressed to oil on canvas.
At about the same time he switched from acrylics to oil, he also switched from brush to palette knife in the application of the paint. Using the palette knife gave him the freedom to bring his love of texture to the canvas, and allowed the application of paint to do more than just depict a landscape. Close examination of each painting reveals small wonders of color and texture within the overall whole of the painting.
Art continues to become more involved with the arts in Grand Junction and western Colorado, and has exhibited in many group shows.
